ROY A. HUNT FOUNDATION SUPPORTS PORTLAND STAGE’S INTERN PROGRAMS FOR THE 6TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR!
We are extremely grateful to the Roy A. Hunt Foundation for their support of our Intern Programs in the amount of $5,000!
Portland Stage is committed to training the next generation of theater professionals through a robust intern program, which has launched the careers of over 400 theater professionals since its inception in 1980. Alumni of our intern program can be found in leadership positions in theaters throughout the US, from the Maltz Jupiter in Florida to Cleveland Play House. Currently, our General Manager, Stage Manager, Literary Manager, Education Director, Education Administrator, Costume Shop Manager, Box Office Associates, and Props Master are all former interns. Members of the 2018-19 intern company have gone on to work or continue their studies at the prestigious Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, DC; the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, NY; Columbia University; and several other institutions across the country.
Established in 1966, the Roy A. Hunt Foundation is an endowed resource that annually grants almost $3 million in the United States.

We are excited to announce a new grant from The Simmons Foundation in support of our In-School K-12 Education Programs. Our Education Programs promote literacy, cultural awareness, and creative thinking, while celebrating a diversity of learning styles. We provide over 14,000 educational experiences annually for K-12th grade students in the Portland Public Schools and across the state.

THE MAINE THEATER FUND RENEWS THEIR SUPPORT FOR PORTLAND STAGE’S 2019-20 SEASON!
The Maine Theater Fund has awarded Portland Stage $3,000 in support of our 2019-20 season – our 12th consecutive year of funding!
Maine Theater Fund’s award will support community engagement initiatives across our season, including Pay-What-You-Can performances, Rush35, Student Matinees, and our free Discussion Series. These programs enable us to provide access and engagement across a diverse audience, and we are very grateful for the continued support.
Established in 2005, the goal of the Maine Theater Fund is to strengthen and sustain theater performance throughout the state. The Maine Theater Fund is designed to support professional and community theaters in the production and presentation of live theater.

THE ONION FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES A THREE-YEAR GRANT TO PORTLAND STAGE IN SUPPORT OF OUR K-12 EDUCATION PROGRAMS – $20,000 PER YEAR!
We’ve got incredible news! The Onion Foundation has selected Portland Stage as one of only 15 organizations to receive a three-year funding commitment! The grant will go towards supporting our K-12 Education Programs, providing enriching and exciting experiences for students across Maine.

MAINE ARTS COMMISSION AWARDS PARTNERSHIP AND ARTS LEARNING GRANTS TO PORTLAND STAGE!
We are thrilled to announce that the Maine Arts Commission will support Portland Stage’s PLAY Program and general operations for the fifth consecutive year through its Arts Learning and Partnership Grant programs. Funding from Maine Arts Commission will help us continue to enrich our community through handcrafted Mainstage Productions, dynamic New Work Development, and innovative theater education for grades K-12.
Maine Arts Commission Arts Learning Grants provide funding to support high-quality visual or performing arts education for Pre-K – 12 students and educators. Partnership Grants provide much-needed unrestricted operating funds to arts organizations and establish a process for partnering with the Maine Arts Commission to advance the role of the arts in strengthening communities and enhancing local economies.

PORTLAND STAGE TO RECEIVE BICENTENNIAL TOURISM ENTERPRISE GRANT FROM THE MAINE OFFICE OF TOURISM!
We are extremely grateful to the Maine Office of Tourism for their funding in the amount of $9,968 towards marketing costs for our 2020 production of Almost, Maine! Since its 2004 world premiere at Portland Stage, Almost, Maine has become one of the most frequently produced plays in the country. The revival production, scheduled to open in January of 2020, will star John Cariani himself, who grew up in Presque Isle and is now a Broadway star and successful playwright. John’s return to Maine to appear in this show is a brilliant example of Maine’s long history of producing talented artists, writers, and musicians. This grant will help Portland Stage to publicize the show in rural areas of the state and beyond.
The Maine Tourism Marketing Partnership Program (MTMPP) was created to assist with the implementation of marketing programs designed to stimulate and expand Maine’s travel and tourism economy by coordinating the promotional efforts of the private sector with those of the Maine Office of Tourism and Regional Destination Marketing Organizations.

THEATER DEVELOPMENT FUND TO SUPPORT OPEN CAPTIONING PERFORMANCES AT PORTLAND STAGE!
Portland Stage is thrilled to be able to provide seven open captioned performances during the 2019-20 Mainstage Season!
WHAT IS OPEN CAPTIONING?
Open captioning is a text display of words and sounds heard during an event. The display is positioned in such a way that it is open for anyone to see in a particular seating area. It is considered passive assistance, a service that is there to use or ignore. No one is labeled as needing the captioning with special equipment required at his/her seat.

SABINA FUNDING GRANTED FROM THE MOSER FAMILY FOUNDATION!
We are thrilled to announce a $10,000 grant from The Moser Family Foundation in support of Sabina! This moving new musical by Willy Holtzman, with music by Louise Beach and lyrics by Darrah Cloud, illuminates Sabina Spielrein, a patient turned doctor, unfairly sidelined to the margins of history by two famous men in her field of psychiatry, Jung and Freud. Sabina will be produced on our mainstage in May 2020!

PORTLAND STAGE TO RECEIVE $15,000 GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS
National Endowment for the Arts Acting Chairman Mary Anne Carter has approved more than $27 million in grants as part of the Arts Endowment’s first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2019. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $15,000 to Portland Stage to support our upcoming production of The Half-Light by Monica Wood.
In The Half-Light, a chance encounter presents a tantalizing question for a college secretary: Can anyone be trained to see the dead? Her dogged pursuit of an answer leads to a far more earthbound challenge when a colleague is felled by grief. The Half-Light is a heartwarming drama about love and purpose that examines the ghosts that live within us all. Affiliate Artist Monica Wood is the author of Papermaker, The One-in-a-Million Boy, and When We Were the Kennedys.
“The arts enhance our communities and our lives, and we look forward to seeing these projects take place throughout the country, giving Americans opportunities to learn, to create, to heal, and to celebrate,” said Mary Anne Carter, acting chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts.

THE PLAY PROGRAM RECEIVES A GRANT FROM THE EDWARD H. DAVEIS BENEVOLENT FUND!
This $2500 grant will support the ongoing implementation of the PLAY Program in the Portland Public Schools. PLAY is an educational initiative that promotes literacy for students in grades K-5 through school-wide performances of children’s books and interactive classroom workshops.
The Edward H. Daveis Benevolent Fund of the Maine Community Foundation was established by the will of his daughter, Mabel Stewart Daveis, in 1943 to honor her father and to benefit nonprofit organizations serving the Greater Portland area. The fund focuses its grantmaking on Greater Portland organizations and programs that support young children aged birth to eight, their families and teachers; as well as youth leadership for students through high school.

The Roy A. Hunt Foundation is continuing its generous support of our Intern Program with a grant of $7,500.
Portland Stage’s Intern Program, now in its 38th year, has trained over 360 theater professionals, helping young people to develop and launch successful careers in the arts since 1980. Thanks to the Roy A. Hunt Foundation’s generosity, we are able to offer our interns a stipend and housing, in addition to immersive training by experts in the field. Participants in our program have gone on to become theater artists, designers, and technicians working at creative organizations around the world.

The Brooks Family Foundation, which has supported The Clauder Competition for New England Playwrights since its inception in 1981, is generously underwriting the first phase of the current competition cycle with a gift of $20,000.
For over three decades, the Clauder Competition has been New England’s most prestigious playwriting award, celebrating the distinctive voices of our region’s playwrights and bringing their work to the attention of the greater theatrical community. Portland Stage has received an MHC/MAC Arts & Humanities Grant to support the English-to-Arabic translation of marketing and promotional materials for our upcoming production of Refuge Malja ملجأ. In addition to the translation of promotional materials, the Arts & Humanities Grant will enable PS to engage Maine’s Muslim and Arabic-speaking communities and foster vital civic dialogue around the issues presented in this world-premiere production.
The Maine Arts Commission and the Maine Humanities Council collaborate to provide Arts & Humanities grants that assist organizations in Maine to investigate and present stories and cultural expressions of the state, its communities and its people.

Thanks to a grant from the Davis Family Foundation, Portland Stage will be replacing many of our current Mainstage lighting fixtures with energy-efficient LED fixtures! This will greatly reduce our energy consumption, allow for innovative approaches to lighting design, and put us in a position to pursue more energy efficiency initiatives in the coming years.

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $25 million in grants as part of the NEA’s first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $15,000 to Portland Stage for our Mainstage production of Babette’s Feast.
Babette’s Feast, which runs through February 18, is a re-imagining of Isak Dinesen’s classic tale as a rich theatrical event: deep, funny, dangerous, sensual, and beautiful. It tells the story of how a refugee transforms a closed religious community by sacrificing all she has to throw a lavish dinner party. Through her radical hospitality, this mysterious woman converts her guests’ deeply held notions of scarcity and judgment and opens them up to give and receive abundant grace. The Art Works category is the NEA’s largest funding category and supports projects that focus on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and/or the strengthening of communities through the arts. This season, Portland Stage is among 10 theaters selected to receive a Writers Alliance Grant from the Dramatists Guild Foundation. This grant provides $5,000 to Portland Stage towards our Mainstage production of The Niceties, and an additional $5,000 to The Niceties playwright Eleanor Burgess.
Writers Alliance Grants are an innovation on DGF’s previous theater program, which has supported theaters for 50 years. Writers Alliance Grants are awarded in celebration of working relationships that align deeply with DGF core values. These grants reflect DGF’s commitment to ensuring writers’ contributions to theater are respected and to changing the national conversation about how writers are treated by the institutions that produce their work. The Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust has awarded Portland Stage a $3,500 grant for our Mainstage production of The Niceties, which will run April 3-22, 2018. In this riveting two-person drama by Eleanor Burgess, a polite clash of ideas between a student and professor soon landslides into an explosive discussion of race, history, privilege, and social justice. We are immensely grateful to the Trust for their support of this passionate, timely new work.

Portland Stage’s Intern Program, now in its 37th year, has trained over 360 theater professionals, helping young people to develop and launch successful careers in the arts since 1980. Thanks to the Roy A. Hunt Foundation’s generosity, we are able to offer our interns a stipend and housing, in addition to immersive training by experts in the field. Participants in our program have gone on to become theater artists, designers, and technicians working at creative organizations around the world.
Established in 1966, the Roy A. Hunt Foundation is an endowed resource that annually grants almost $3 million in the United States.

The Morton-Kelly Charitable Trust has generously renewed its support of our Directors Lab program for a third year! This innovative program for middle- and high-schoolers brings professionally trained Teaching Artists into schools to present a 45-minute version of a Shakespeare play. The performance is followed by an interactive workshop that gives students a chance to direct excerpts from the play and explore the power of interpretation.

The Maine Theater Fund of the Maine Community Foundation has awarded Portland Stage a $5,000 grant in support of our 2017-2018 season!
This grant will help us continue to provide many points of entry for a diverse population to engage with our productions and programs. Maine Theater Fund’s award will support community engagement initiatives across our season, including Pay-What-You-Can nights, Student Matinees, and our free Discussion Series.
Established in 2005, the goal of the Maine Theater Fund is to strengthen and sustain theater performance throughout the state. The Maine Theater Fund is designed to support professional and community theaters in the production and presentation of live theater.

Thanks to the tremendous support of Migis Hotel Group, Louis and Prudence Ryan, and many generous individual donors, Portland Stage has installed a brand new hearing loop in our Mainstage. This cutting edge system works with T-Coil hearing aids so that actor’s voices and sound cues are tracked directly through patron’s hearing aid, ear buds, or borrowed headset.
